Focus on What Matters (Even When It’s Squirrel Season)
The other day, I caught my dog frozen in full alert mode, staring out the patio door. A squirrel had just landed on the fence, and nothing else in the world existed for those few minutes. The intensity, the focus - you’d think it was a national emergency.
It made me laugh, but also... it made me think about business.
Because August is peak squirrel season for small business owners.
New ideas, competitor noise, half-baked trends, back-to-school chaos, holiday prep whispers, and a dozen things that feel urgent. And yet, not everything that moves is worth chasing.
Every Distraction Has a Cost
Being aware is one thing. But reacting to every new thing that crosses your path? That’s exhausting. And expensive. Time, energy, attention - they’re not infinite resources.
Here’s what I remind myself (and my clients) in seasons like this:
Just because you could doesn’t mean you should.
Not every opportunity aligns with your values or vision.
Growth doesn’t require constant movement - it requires intentional movement.
So... What Actually Matters Right Now?
That depends on your season. But a good August check-in might include:
Are we still on track with what we said mattered in January or Q2?
What’s working really well right now that we can double down on?
What’s feeling cluttered, distracted, or draining?
Sometimes the best next step isn’t chasing the squirrel—it’s reinforcing the fence, watering the garden, or resting under the tree you already planted.
Watch Carefully, Respond Intentionally
I love how my dog watches with laser focus. He doesn't bark, run, or panic. He just notices. And then when it’s clear the squirrel is no threat (or too fast), he lies down and takes a nap.
You can do the same:
Stay aware of what’s happening in your industry.
Watch your competitors without copying them.
Notice trends, but pause before shifting your priorities.
What to Focus On This Month
If you need a short list, here are three things worth your attention:
One system that needs streamlining. What’s been messy for too long?
One customer segment that deserves more love. Who’s your best-fit client?
One area of energy leak. What’s draining you or your team?
None of these are flashy. But they’re the foundation of a strong fall season.
Final Thought
Squirrels will come and go. Some will be entertaining. Some might nibble at your success. But most? They’re just noise.
This August, focus on what matters. Eyes on your mission. Ears tuned to your people. Energy directed toward what will actually move your business forward.
Your version of success is too important to get distracted now.
