Graduation Season: Navigating the Next Business Climb

Navigating the Next Business Climb

It’s graduation season - a time for caps, gowns, hugs, proud moments, and that mix of excitement and nerves about what comes next. Whether it’s a student stepping into a new chapter or a business owner wrapping up a season of hard work and growth, there's something in the air that says: pause, reflect, and then take a deep breath before moving forward.

The photo I’m sharing today is from Yosemite. There's a fast-moving rapid right in front, with a rocky trail just behind it and a mountain path barely peeking out ahead. It feels like the perfect metaphor for these in-between moments. The rapids? That rush of what’s coming - uncertain, energetic, maybe a bit intimidating. The rocky path behind? That’s everything you've just navigated to get here. And the mountain trail ahead? It’s where you’re headed, even if you can’t quite see how it all connects just yet.

If you're a small business owner, maybe you're feeling a bit of that right now. You wrapped up a big project, or hit a milestone, or maybe you're about to try something new. Whatever it is, it can feel like graduation: part celebration, part deep breath.

What You’re Taking With You

Just like graduates don’t leave empty-handed, neither do you. You carry:

- Lessons (the good, the hard, and the surprisingly helpful)

- People (collaborators, customers, and cheerleaders)

- Experience (the kind you can’t buy, only earn)

That’s your pack for the trail ahead. You’re not starting ove - you’re moving forward with tools in hand.

Take a Beat

Before you jump into the next big thing, it’s worth pausing for a moment:

- What worked?

- What surprised you?

- What would you do differently?

This isn’t fluff, it’s the kind of reflection that gives you clarity for the road ahead.

Yes, It’s a Little Scary (and That’s Okay)

Starting something new - a product, a hire, a market shift - can feel like standing at the edge of those rapids. You’re not sure exactly how you’ll get across. The trail picks up somewhere on the other side, but from here, it’s all whitewater and slippery rocks.

And still... you move forward.

Because the path behind you, however bumpy, got you here. And that counts for something. You already have what you need to take the next step. Not the whole climb. Just the next step.

To the Builders and Dreamers...

If you're running a small business, especially in the food world, where things move fast and margins are tight, I see you. Maybe you’re moving from scrappy survival mode to something more grounded. Maybe you’re starting to build a team, step back a little, or scale what you've already built.

Wherever you are, take a second to appreciate it. The journey so far. The rapids you're about to cross. The mountain you're climbing.

And then, when you're ready - step in. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

Because that view? Yeah, it's going to be something special.
